Defining Architectural Excellence in West Palm Beach’s Historic El Cid

On the surface, this home, located in West Palm Beach’s historic El Cid neighborhood, echoes the architectural legacy of the area; however, a deeper look reveals a masterclass in modern design and craftsmanship. Designed and built by Melhorn Architecture & Construction, the South Flagler Residence reflects the firm’s commitment to detail, contextual sensitivity, and just plain good design. The office, headed by architect John Melhorn, drew on historic precedent to create a timeless design, tailor-made for a client with a deep appreciation for art and architecture.

The Philosophy Behind the Work

Quality architecture relies primarily on three elements: durability of the structure, functionality of the spaces, and the aesthetic beauty intrinsic in the design. These values define each project from Melhorn’s studio, located in Jupiter, Florida, which has built its reputation on designing and constructing homes that feel rooted in history and context while being distinctly modern in execution and function.

“I’ve always been attracted to the tangible aspects of architecture,” Melhorn reflects. “Envisioning and bringing something into existence is what excites me, and that tangibility goes hand in hand with the technical nature of architecture—how things work together and how you arrange them to create something beautiful and lasting.”

This philosophy is evident in the South Flagler Residence, where every detail—from the interplay of the building’s massing to the composition of materials—was carefully considered.

Rooted in Context

Situated within a neighborhood known for its rich architectural legacy, the home was designed to honor the past while considering the needs of its contemporary occupants.

El Cid is brimming with Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial influences, which provided the ideal backdrop for a project that embraces those architectural traditions. Inspired by the work of celebrated local architects such as Addison Mizner and Maurice Fatio, the South Flagler Residence echoes the craftsmanship and classical proportions that have long defined this area.

“The site, the climate, and the surrounding context always play a role in guiding the design,” Melhorn explains. “We wanted this home to feel as though it had always been there—blending effortlessly with the character of the neighborhood and contributing to that character—while still accommodating modern needs and innovations.”

One method of achieving this was through a curated palette of traditional materials. Dominican coral stone, handmade terracotta barrel tiles, and on-site formed stucco moldings all contribute to the sense of a home with enduring personality—one that will only grow more beautiful with time.

A Thoughtful Approach

The home’s unique entryway was designed to mitigate the challenge of an elevated first floor—required due to updated floodplain ordinances—by introducing a concealed plinth around the entire property. From the street, this plinth (or platform) appears as an elegant stucco site wall, while inside, the house and yard are elevated five feet above the neighboring properties. Graceful terraced steps and pathways create a subtle transition to the main entrance.

A separate guest cottage was strategically placed to frame the opposite side of the property, guiding visitors toward the entry while also serving a functional purpose—concealing garages and creating a private courtyard on a lot that faces a street on both sides.

Designed for Living, Indoors and Out

One of the defining features of the South Flagler Residence is its thoughtful connection between indoor spaces and outdoor living. The home is oriented to maximize views of the Intracoastal Waterway, with a large east-facing arcade. The checkerboard tiles of Nero Marquina marble lead to steps descending to a lap pool set in a verdant, expertly structured landscape designed by Nievera Williams Design.

“Arched openings not only frame the views but also conceal roll-down insect screens, allowing for year-round enjoyment of the outdoor spaces,” Melhorn notes. “The deep loggia offers a perfect setting for evening gatherings, while also providing much-needed shade to the interiors from the intense morning sun.”

An outdoor shower, directly adjacent to the primary suite’s bath, further reinforces the connection to nature. Designed with a teak-finished bench seat and river rock flooring, the outdoor shower is tucked within a secluded alcove beneath a canopy of trees, creating a tranquil and intimate space for bathing.

The Elegance of Materiality and Craftsmanship

The architectural composition of the South Flagler Residence has refined proportions that give it a firm and timeless foundation, but its material selections elevate it to a work of art.

“We believe that proper proportion costs nothing extra, and composing a project around symmetry and alignment will always bring harmony and elegance,” says Melhorn. “Materiality plays a crucial role in achieving that authenticity.”

The use of hand-hewn wood beams, finely detailed millwork, and custom ironwork reflects a commitment to craftsmanship. Floors throughout the home are composed of white oak in a herringbone pattern, lending a warm, sophisticated complement to the wax-plastered walls. In the kitchen, a custom Calacatta marble island contrasts with the stainless-steel cabinetry. Overall, the home was designed with an eye toward beauty and longevity.

A Legacy of Thoughtful Design

At its core, the South Flagler Residence is both a home and a proof of concept for Melhorn’s ethos: to create spaces that are at once functional, beautiful, and deeply personal.

“Trust is the single most important element when designing someone’s home,” Melhorn emphasizes. “It’s an intimate process that requires careful listening and a shared vision. The best results always come from collaboration.”

This philosophy is not only reflected in the home itself but also in the relationships that brought it to life. From landscape architect Keith Williams and interior designer Betsy Brown, to the team of master craftsmen who executed every detail with precision, the project is a study in collaboration—where architecture, interiors, and gardens harmonize masterfully.

With its ageless elegance, impeccable craftsmanship, and respect for its surroundings, the South Flagler Residence is more than a new addition to the El Cid neighborhood—it is a benchmark for luxury living in South Florida.
